The University of Leipzig was founded in 1409 which makes it one of the oldest universities in Europe. It has a student population of 16,700 and every tenth student is a foreigner.
Leipzig has a population of some 530,000 inhabitants and is a city of the state of Saxony. With its rich traditions and an optimistic future ahead of it, the town is a pleasant place to live. For 800 years Leipzig attracted many fairs and as a result it became a European trade center. The town became filled with visitors from near and far. Today, the Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Prof. Kurt Masur, the world-famous Thomaner Choir of the Thomas Church, the system of passage ways in the town center, museums, theaters and the Nicolai Church are all symbols of cultural interest.

University of Leipzig offers two choices for exchange students: halls of residence or shared apartments.
A room in the Halls of Residence run by the Studentenwerk Leipzig (Leipzig Student Services) has the advantage of already being furnished and enables you to make contact with other students. This gives students the oppurtunity to live with German and foreign students in the residence halls.
Shared apartments, so-called Wohngemeinschaften (WG), are particularly popular among Leipzig students. In a shared apartment two or more students share a whole apartment which includes a bathroom and a kitchen. There are various ways to find a room or a shared apartment, for example through accomadation adverts, housing and room agencies, and the Akademisches Auslandsamt (International Centre) accomodation service.
Students apply separately for housing after receiving the acceptance letter.
